How to read your cosmetic labels

PRACTICAL GUIDE TO UNDERSTAND THE SYMBOLS AND CODES OF YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCTS

Do you know that the labels of your skincare products hide key information about their ingredients and use? Understanding words like INCI, PAO and other packaging symbols is essential to get the most out of your beauty routine. We teach you how to read boxes and packaging like an expert!

INCI: What is it?

It is a list of the ingredients ordered from highest to lowest concentration. Each component appears with its official name following the INCI system (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients), a standard that translates the science of your formula into a universal language.

More is not always better. Each ingredient has an “effective efficacy dose”, that is, an adequate concentration to offer its benefit. Sometimes more can be counterproductive.

GRAMS OR MILILITERS: Precision counts

Have you noticed the “e” next to the grams or milliliters of your cosmetic? Indicates that the “net content” has been measured. And always just before it comes a clue about the product. If you see “fl. oz,” you are looking at a more liquid formula, like a toner or essence. If you read “net wt.” (net weight), it is more solid, like a serum or cream.

PAO: How long does an opened cosmetic last?

PAO

You've probably seen a symbol of a small open bottle with a number followed by an M. That's the PAO (Period After Opening), and it tells you how many months your skincare product lasts once opened. It's like your cosmetic countdown!

In addition, you will find in some products, such as sunscreens, the printed expiration date. That's because they have a useful life of less than 30 months.

TRACEABILITY: The footprint of your product

Barcode

Do you know the difference between barcode and lot number? Our products include both for optimal traceability.

  • • Bar code: Identifies the product as a commercial reference and allows us to manage distribution and marketing, improving automation and inventory control.
  • • Batch number: Records the specific manufacturing batch and helps us know at all times when the cosmetic you have in your hands was produced.

POINT VERDE ECOEMBES: Guide to recycling

Recycling

Does that circle of two arrows intertwined around a vertical axis sound familiar to you? This is the Ecoembes Green Point, a sign that confirms our participation in the packaging recycling system, ensuring responsible environmental management.

Since January 2025, we have incorporated a QR code on our packaging. When you scan it, you will access a page where we explain in which container you should deposit each of your cosmetics. Join our commitment to the environment!

BROCHURE: Your ally for correct use

Hand over leaflet

That icon is your key resource to know the correct way to apply your cosmetic and make the most of its benefits. This symbol indicates that the box includes a leaflet with instructions for use and other relevant information.

Other symbols that make a difference

You can also identify other icons, such as the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), which certifies that the cardboard in our boxes comes from sustainably managed forests. In addition, you will find warnings and/or precautions on cosmetics with specific ingredients, such as some acids or retinol.
