Built in 1897, the Conservatorium was first a bank, then a music school and
It ended up being a hotel. Could you explain more about this evolution and how it has
influenced the current design of the building?
The building was built at the end of the 19th century as a bank that promoted the regeneration of the
museum quarter of Amsterdam, thus becoming a great symbol of prosperity
commercial and cultural in the city.
Throughout the 20th century, the banking group that ran the building suffered a series of
mergers and ended up abandoning it in 1978. Five years later, it became the headquarters
of the newly created Sweelinck Conservatory and the bank was transformed into a music school
great prestige.
Conservatory students played there for many decades until, in 2008, it began its
evolution towards the current “Conservatorium”, which opened its doors three years later.
The name of the hotel is precisely linked to its
past function, and the Italian architect and designer tasked with transforming this historic
building into a contemporary hotel, Pierro Lissoni, also wanted to maintain both the façade
exterior and interior design some elements that reflect its unique history.
Proof of this are the violins that hang in the hotel hall or the drawings of spiders and
cobwebs, a symbol of savings, which can be seen on the tiles of the shopping gallery.
In addition to that, the main feature of the hotel is the glass window that encloses the patio
interior of the building creating an open area with natural light from which the
perfect fusion between the classic and modern details of the current construction.
02
When the Conservatorium was transformed
in a large hotel, you wanted to keep alive its social relationship with musical culture and the art of
Amsterdam, what cultural activities does the hotel offer?
Nowadays, musical performances are held regularly at the hotel, which can be attended by both
guests such as residents or visitors to Amsterdam. However, our cultural commitment to
city goes far beyond music.
A rotating selection of works by contemporary artists is displayed in the hotel lobby, and
We also have a permanent art collection that includes everything from historical Dutch works
to entirely new commissions inspired by the Conservatorium's cultural and musical history.
On the other hand, some Suites have a balcony with views of the Stedelijk Museum, inviting you to get to know it, and
They are also decorated with prestigious works by local artists such as Jasper Krabbé or Bastiaan Woudt.
What do guests like most?
The informal atmosphere and the contrast between the bustle of the lobby and the tranquility of the spa or the zones private.
