Menopause: Frequently asked questions

Menopause is a stage that most women experience and, even so, it continues to generate many doubts. Among so much noise, myths and half-truths, it is not always easy to find clear answers. That is why we have compiled the most frequently asked questions from the Natura Bissé community and have answered them together with the Spanish gynecologist Sofía Fournier, a specialist in Fetal Medicine and high-risk Obstetrics.

We hope they help you see this stage more clearly.

01

How important is it to go to the gynecologist during this stage?

The first thing to keep in mind is that the gynecologist is a great support during this period. Therefore, it is essential to share all the symptoms you perceive at that moment, even if you think they are not important or related. Thus, depending on your symptoms, they will be able to advise you on your ideal treatment.

Secondly, we must not forget the annual reviews. menopause reaches an age when other diseases can also appear, such as breast cancer, so densitometry will have to be done more periodically to check the good state of bone mass.

Finally, it is very important to perform blood tests since during this hormonal process cholesterol usually increases and levels of vitamin E and calcium decrease.

02

Could it be that cellulite and varicose veins increase?

It is very common for muscle mass to decrease and the feeling of flaccidity and fatty tissue to increase, especially in the trunk area, from the chest to the middle of the thigh. This can not only result in cellulite and/or varicose veins, but also in the appearance of lumps or increased volume in the abdomen. That is why it is so important to take care of your diet and do physical exercise.

03

Is it normal to have insomnia and a constant feeling of tiredness? How can I combat it?

Feeling a certain emotional lability and irritability, as well as having insomnia are very common symptoms in menopausal women. Specifically, insomnia is often accentuated by hot flashes. To deal with it, there are medical treatments, as well as nutritional supplements, adaptogens, and natural compounds that the gynecologist can prescribe.

04

I have been taking contraceptives for a long time, could this lead to early menopause?

No, taking contraceptives does not determine when you enter menopause.

But you must remember the main reason why you started taking them. For example, if you use them to regulate your cycle, chances are that when you stop them your period irregularities will return.

05

Is it possible to experience menopause without symptoms? In that case, do any special measures need to be taken?

It is true that the symptoms during this stage are very different among women. If you do not have symptoms, it is not necessary to take any drug or nutritional supplement, but you should not forget to visit the gynecologist regularly because the analytical and imaging controls must remain the same.

06

Is the age of onset related to genetics?

The age of entry is multifactorial, but it is true that the genetic factor is one of the most important. When someone comes to the consultation presenting symptoms early, one of the first questions we ask is if someone in their environment has had an early menopause and in that case, we must follow the case a little more closely.

07

When is early menopause considered?

When it appears before the age of 45. The average age is 50 years, so we would say that the normal range would be between 45 and 55. If starting earlier, it is advisable to do some type of hormone replacement treatment.

08

I have noticed changes in mood, it is as if patience has vanished, what is recommended to manage these changes?

Having constant mood swings is absolutely normal. It is important to be aware that it is a specific phase of life, something that will not last forever, and in which we must listen to ourselves.

Minimizing surrounding stressors and controlling the quality of rest can help us manage stress and reduce feelings of anxiety.

09

Is itchy skin one of the effects of menopause? Besides moisturizing, which doesn't seem to minimize it, what can I do to keep my skin from itching?

This itching is due to dehydration. The skin becomes more sensitive because it thins, and that makes it more fragile. My recommendation is to moisturize deeply and use skin-friendly cosmetics. It is also important not to use fabric softener in the washing machine, and that the detergent is hypoallergenic. Try to wear cotton clothing and neutral colors, and in the shower it is better to use an oatmeal gel.

10

What do you think about hormone replacement therapy?

The menopause should not be a major handicap in a woman's life. Yes with nutraceuticals, adaptogens, lifestyle adaptation (regular sport and healthy eating), stress reduction, etc. If we cannot control the symptoms, we can go ahead with this type of therapy. We should not demonize it, since it helps us combat all these symptoms.

11

Speaking of self-care, could going to the spa or following a daily skincare routine help me?

Absolutely. Taking time to feel good, take care of yourself and look beautiful is essential to cope better. Women go through several stages that can be a bit physically and emotionally complex, such as pregnancy, postpartum or menopause. Investing in hair and skin care will help us feel better about ourselves inside and out.
